Community Spirit on Display as Local Businesses Join Killarney Tidy Towns for ‘Super Meitheal’

Community Spirit

Killarney’s strong community spirit was on full display last Wednesday as a super meitheal brought together staff from MD O’Shea & Sons, the Great Southern Hotel and Killarney Royal Townhouse, alongside volunteers from Killarney Tidy Towns, to undertake a full day of work repainting the railings in front of the Franciscan Friary.

The initiative formed part of Killarney’s Tidy Towns efforts for 2026 and saw businesses, staff and volunteers come together to give their time and energy to one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks. By the end of the day, the railings had been transformed, providing a fresh and well-maintained finish to this prominent area of the town centre.

The project was made possible through a tremendous contribution from the local community. Timmy O’Sullivan of Easy Clean generously provided his time and equipment to power wash the railings in preparation for painting. Donal ‘Dux’ O’Donoghue of Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours also generously gave his time and expertise to help prepare the surfaces for the work.to begin.

With fine weather adding to the day, the painting got underway with a great sense of camaraderie. MD O’Shea & Sons generously sponsored the paint and materials for the project and released members of their staff to dedicate a full day to the work. They were joined by teams from the Great Southern Hotel and Killarney Royal Townhouse, who rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside Killarney Tidy Towns volunteers to complete the job.

The result is a simple but highly visible improvement to an important part of Killarney’s streetscape, demonstrating the difference that can be made when local businesses and community volunteers come together with a shared commitment to the town.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce extends its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the project, including the businesses, volunteers and individuals who gave their time, resources and expertise.

Initiatives such as this are a wonderful reflection of the community spirit that exists throughout Killarney. The willingness of local businesses and individuals to step forward, work together and give back to the town is an important part of what makes Killarney such a special place to live, work and visit — and helps ensure that the town continues to look its very best throughout the year. Ní neart go cur le chéile.
