Big Win at As I am Awards

Killarney is celebrating after Autism Friendly Killarney received national recognition at the As I Am Ireland Awards, taking home the Inclusive Events Award at a ceremony held in Dublin’s City Hall on Saturday night.
The award marks a major achievement for the group, which has spent the past three years working to make events across Killarney more accessible and welcoming for neurodiverse individuals and their families.

Through their efforts, more than 20 local events have introduced autism-friendly supports, including quiet hours, sensory spaces and designated safe areas. Events such as Christmas in Killarney, Rally of the Lakes, St Patrick’s Day celebrations, Wander Wild Festival and Bikefest have all worked with the group to create more inclusive experiences for attendees.

The award highlights the growing commitment across the town to ensure everyone can enjoy local events in a comfortable and supportive environment. Organisers are now increasingly reaching out to Autism Friendly Killarney for guidance on making their events more accessible.

The ceremony itself reflected the values of inclusion, with traditional applause replaced by silent hand waves throughout the evening.

Everyone involved with Autism Friendly Killarney should be incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition, which highlights the positive impact the group continues to make in the community.
